Breath is the outer aspect of Prana (life energy force). As we deepen and harmonize our breathing, we also slow it down. As we become calmer, our mind also becomes more lucid an the flow of our awareness is less and less interrupted by intruding thoughtws and emotions. We enter the higher state of consciousness.
